Olhuveli Reef

Maldives

Auszug aus dem KITE AND WINDSURFING GUIDE:

South Malé Atoll, about 50 minutes from the airport by speedboat, is the most promising. The island of Olhuveli offers flat water as well as wave spots, plus a well equipped watersports centre. In Olhuveli Sommer Spot launch south of the centre on the kilometre-long, crystal-clear, standing-depth lagoon, but in Olhuveli Winter Spot up to the east coast which suits the opposite wind direction. You might need boots as there’s some coral here. On the Olhuveli Reef kiters can ride medium-sized waves at high tide, but it’s too shallow for windsurf fins. The water’s deeper 5km north in the reef channel off the fishing island Guraidhoo, but it’s still kite territory there’s not much room for windsurf gear on the boat-ride in. A team from Olhuveli runs another windsurf centre at 'Medhufushi’ on South Nilandhe Atoll. Windsurfers can find a protected flat-water area in front of the exclusive resort Vilu Reef. Kiting’s possible but you’ll have to bring your own gear and some experience as there’s no room for beginners. There’s more space on 'Dhidhoofinolhu’ in Ari Atoll, one of the larger islets at 1.8km long. The Diva Beach Resort (previously White Sands) also runs a windsurf centre, but again 'bring your own’ applies for kiters. 'Nalaguraidhoo’ or Sun Island offers similar conditions, but gets very shallow in places at low tide. Another option is Kuredo on Lhaviyani Atoll north of Malé, promising pure white sand and crystal-clear aquamarine water. This islet boasts a well-equipped watersports centre and several launches, so summer or winter the wind’s always cross to cross-onshore in the standing-depth lagoon. The alternative to the luxurious castaway lifestyle ashore is to discover the ocean on a Boattrip – perfect for surfers who can cruise all the best breaks. Most embark from Malé destined for great waves like 'Honkeys’, 'Sultans’ or 'Chickens’ on North Malé Atoll. Space can be tight for launching kites or carrying windsurf kit, but a boat charter works out affordable if a group of eight get together.
