'Peniche', Baleal and breaks like 'Supertubes’ are synonymous with Europe’s most radical waves! But this peninsular offers more than hardcore breaks for pro surfers – with enough wind you can kite or windsurf on smaller days too. The Nortada rarely breaks Force 4, so although kiters can often hit the water there's not so much windsurfing. In rare easterly wind with swell, Baleal offers Hawaiian-quality sessions. Powerful waves break up to 3.5m, particularly clean on the bay's sandbars at low to mid-tide. High tide or huge swell tends to close out, with a heavy shorebreak on the beach. A fierce current pulls out to sea, especially in the east of the bay. Stay well clear of the point for more constant wind and less conflict with the surfers.
