Auszug aus dem KITE AND WINDSURFING GUIDE:

The breaks at the start of the Great Ocean Road are some of Australia's best-known surfing beaches. Bells Beach found international fame through the movie 'Point Break’. You need to be on your game to survive here – because of the cliffs’ wind-shadow, launch at low tide beyond the windline. Windsurf legend Jason Polakow’s home town Torquay has a long association with surfing, and although Point Danger is a backside wave with cross-onshore wind, it’s a good departure for downwinders to numerous beach-breaks including Point Impossible and 13th beach. Heading towards Melbourne, the popular summer holiday destination Barwon Heads East, Barwon Heads West provides flat water on either side of the river estuary depending on wind direction. Beware the fast tidal flow, which can carry the unwary up- or downriver. Upstream, the shallow, weed-infested Lake Conneware offers more space but does demand a weed fin. The largest town on the Bellarine Peninsular, Ocean Grove gets super-busy in summertime when the town’s population swells by a factor of four, filling up the beaches. The venues on Port Phillip Bay start in the SW with Point Richards and Point Henry in Geelong. The western outskirts of the city are marked by Altona’s Apex Park while down the east side are the city beaches of St Kilda Marina, Brighton Beach, Green Point, Hampton, Ricketts Point, Aspendale, Frankston and Rye Front Beach. The thermal sea breeze is strongest in town but the beaches are more crowded too (kite zones) – it gets quieter yet less windy further south the along the eastern port. On the southern side of Mornington Peninsular, a whole stretch of coastline offers ample opportunity to ride waves – a 1m swell in Torquay is double to triple the size here, but it’s so rocky that beaches like Portsea and Gunnamatta are primarily surfing breaks. Another insider tip is the coastline between Point Leo and Flinders with reef-breaks that can work year round but also some rocky stretches. Opposite, 'Phillip Island’ is known for its penguins, seals and their predators with those triangular fins. Flynns Reef on the western tip is a perfect point-break for waveriding in cross-off SW, while Woolamai picks the swell up frontal. On Foots Safety Beach over the bridge, the waves are smaller but fast – best at mid to low tide. Inverloch is one of Victoria’s prime kitesurfing locations, offering a lot of safety within the estuary. Outside, loads of waves go unsurfed on the kilometre-long beach-break. Sandy Point also has two faces: a flat inlet where speed-freaks cut loose, or great wave potential in cross-shore NW or SE winds.
