South Delray Beach

South Florida

Auszug aus dem KITE AND WINDSURFING GUIDE:

One of the nicer winter locations on Florida’s western Gulf of Mexico coast is Sanibel Island. There are various beaches just beyond the causeway on the first island, but watch for currents around the bridges. Southerlies whip up 1m kickers near the tollbooths. At South Fort Myers Beach launch at the very south end of the smooth white sands. Nearer the Everglades Marco Island offers a mix of open water Gulf riding and shallow flat-water areas, but gets crowded in N to NW frontal winds. Restrictions apply and riding’s banned in the bird sanctuary lagoon. The drive through the scenic Keys is an experience in itself. Smathers Beach in Key West is one of the few public beaches and therefore popular. Be careful of the road and power lines in onshore winds, and contact the Kitehouse for a houseboat trip to the Key West Flats. The 'Whale Harbor’ or Islamorada Flats are much closer to the mainland so the Caribbean atmosphere, shallow water and sandbars can be reached by rental jet ski. The Atlantic coast is highly populated and Miami has strictly regulated launches. Matheson Hammock boasts some of the best views of Miami, so gets seriously crowded – check the sign for kiting rules. It’s often onshore here and some areas are too shallow at low tide. Miami’s most famous kite spot, Crandon Park on Key Biscayne has shallow, flat water inshore and surf breaking over the reef further out. Rules need to be observed here – kiters must have IKO / PASA Level III certification, wear a helmet, register and pay entrance fees. Windsurfers launch a bit further south. Some of the flattest conditions are around the houses on stilts in Stiltsville on the Miami Flats. The mirror-calm waters work in all wind directions and are accessible by boats locally known as “kiting sea taxis”. South Fort Lauderdale Beach or 'Tiki Beach’ is at the south end of the public beach. Kiters must use the launch corridor and stay 100 yards outside the buoyed swimming area, so it’s vital they can hold an edge upwind. Pompano Beach is a little less demanding, just observe the posted rules and watch out for boat traffic. There’s some chop inside the sandbar and waves further out on the reef, which can dry out at low tide. Strong winds develop a nice beach-break at South Delray Beach. Launch, land and ride at least 150m south of the supervised beach area, and stay at least 100m offshore! Juno Kite Beach is often better but can get overcrowded, especially during the Annual Jupiter Kiteboarding Invasion. Stay at least 100m north of the fishing pier and don’t underestimate the hefty shorebreak and strong ripsJupiter Inlet has a white sandy beach and magnificent green waters. The launch is just south of the lifeguard towers, or further south at the northern end of Carlin Park in E to SE winds. Launch either side of the towers at Hobe Sound Public in the middle of Jupiter Island’s endless beaches. Advanced kiters can manage the downwinder to Blowing Rocks State Park whose rocky seabed handles a large swell, just beware of the stone ledge on the beach!
