Anse Vata

Nouvelle-Calédonie

Auszug aus dem KITE AND WINDSURFING GUIDE:

Anse Vata is one of three spots in the capital Nouméa. Freestylers perform in front of the promenade inside the bay, while in winter 3m+ waves break out on the reef. Plage de Magenta is also great for freestyle and waves, but it’s windsurfers only as kiting has been banned so close to the airport. The popular kite spot is Plage de Meridien near the Meridien Hotel, despite a 200m walk to launch and land not really suiting beginners. Nouméa (Anse Vata) is one place to catch a water taxi to the offshore reefs and islands. Just 15 minutes away, Ilôt Maître is a perfect freeride spot with consistent winds and shallow waters. Another brilliant place to learn is the beautiful lagoon on Ilôt Goeland, a good 20 minutes away. It’s about 20km to the famous surfing break of Passe de Dumbéa. From Bouraké Wharf, 30 minutes west of Tontouta Airport, it’s a 25-minute boat ride to Ilôt Ténia. Ténia’s big, deep lagoon isn’t particularly beginner friendly but there’s great wave action in the reef channel. Heading north-west on the main island Grand Terre unearths two more spots: Ouano is a world-class left breaking on sharp coral (head for 'La Foa’, take a left just before town and it’s 5km by boat to the reef). About 170km north-west of Nouméa, Plage de Poé offers 17km of sandy beach with a large shallow lagoon that’s perfect for beginners (from Nouméa, drive to 'Bourail’, hang a left just before town and follow the road 15km straight to the beach). It’s best to fly to Lifou Ouvea Maré, although kit may have to follow separately as cargo. The next snag might be seeking permission to launch from the local chief. Easo in the north-west is an option for SW-W winds, with no danger of hitting the reef as the ocean bed drops away steeply. In the large bay opposite, Plage de Peng is great in W swell and offers excellent scuba diving if it doesn’t blow. Baie de Chateaubriand is the only place you don’t need permission to ride. Two kilometres of white sandy beach boasts turquoise waters and a reef 500m offshore where waves can hit 3m on their day. In the bay a centre rents out windsurfing kit and provides rescue cover. The coastline around Mou in the south-east of the island offers a wealth of little bays. Mainly sandy beaches with a reef-wave offshore that won’t break as clean as the channels elsewhere. Mou 2 is a secret spot 1km north where rocks shelter perfectly flat water but also mean it’s not so turquoise. Careful at low tide as the reef can catch a fin.
