Alongside Ostende, this chilled-out spot in the dunes is among the best Belgium has to offer. The European Freestyle Pro Tour stages events here – but it would be a shame if it were only known for freestyle. When it’s nuking, Bredene can hold huge, clean waves. South-westerly is perfectly cross-shore, as is the opposite – north-easterly – which works very nicely too. The launch from the first of six sections of beach is hard to find; from De Haan, turn off the main road down a little gated track. Follow the narrow lane through the dunes to 'Twins’ surf-club (nice clubhouse with good food). Park over to one side and walk across the dunes to the water. Out of season, you can even get away with sleeping in your van here.
