Experienced windsurfers occasionally cross to Sicily at the Strait of Messina’s narrowest point from its northernmost mainland launch of Cannitello. But be careful – there are immense currents in these narrows, and it’s crawling with ferry traffic. Even worse, since ancient times it’s been believed that the Strait harbours sea-monsters lurking for prey.
