De Houw is a pure windsurfing spot, as kiting is banned in the bird sanctuary. West to south-westerly winds allow blasting over shallow, flat waters at the north-eastern end of the enclosing dyke. When easterly blows offshore further down the east bank, it still works along the Afsluisdijk – although strong winds can blow the water away, making it shallower than a slalom fin in places.
