If the North Sea's too hardcore, there's an alternative on the mudflats at Dijkmanshuizen. Particularly popular in easterly wind, the standing-depth water makes it suitable for beginners too – although there are sharp shells on the seabed so boots are a wise idea. At high tide the beach is too small for launching a kite, so use the field behind instead. Southerlies blow in more freely at 'Serus', south of Oudeschild, with very similar conditions.
