Just 35km from Glasgow, there are plenty of flat-water options near Helensburgh. The best launch in southerly winds is 'Ardmore Point', south-east of town. A wide sandy beach endears it to kiters, while the pebble beaches elsewhere are much tighter. Like the town centre promenade, which suits south-east to north-westerlies – although the water edges up the sea wall at high tide. At the mouth of Gare Loch, 'Rhu Spit’ is also popular in a north-westerly.
