At this first venue beyond Bilbao, just before the Cantabrian border, the scenery gets much more natural again while the water quality gradually improves (apart from the little oil refinery upstream). La Arena's wide beach is mostly a winter spot in onshore north-westerly – it works for freeride without swell, or at low tide in moderate waves. Onshore winds and gnarly shorebreak mean high tide isn't for beginners, and overall it better suits kiting than windsurfing.
