What's special about the coast west of Huelva is its combination of wave potential on the ocean and flat-water conditions in the lagoons and estuaries. The ocean side of Punta Umbria is one of the region's best breaks in off-season low-pressure. Waves quickly build, reaching 3 or 4m when it’s really blowing, although they do close-out at high tide. Best conditions for frontside riding come in west to north-westerly winds. Only rare south-easterly can be any better as the waves line up nicely along the jetty. A south-westerly summer thermal blows pretty consistently, when the water stays flat with perhaps some chop for jumping. The beach is very wide and safe, the current's just a bit stronger at the rivermouth and jetty.
