Mikri Vigla, Naxos

Your fillings had better be solid, as the Meltemi is thermally supercharged here. Even so, Mikri Vigla quickly became the top kite beach on Naxos. The wind is cross-onshore – but it only looks safe at first glance, as the beach is quite narrow and mostly full of kit (usually with fins up). Plus the cape at the end of the bay is rocky – and, last but not least, the water's often full of swimmers despite the wind. Hence caution and some experience are required. On rare southerly days, walk a few hundred metres down the beach to launch beyond the point. There are two supermarkets, three tavernas and two kite and windsurf centers in the small town – but even so, if you really want some nightlife you still need to take the long road to Naxos.
