Peñarrubia is a popular Gijón surf-spot, and this rocky little beach is one of the area’s best windsurfing breaks in strong north-easterly wind too. In contrast to many other beaches, the waves breaking over rocks stay clean even in a big swell. Best between low and mid-tide, as there’s a nasty shorebreak at high. The beach is really too small for kiting, while stones and rocks add to the danger. Barefoot riders beware: the launch is full of sea urchins.
