Sankt Peter-Ording

Nordfriesland

Auszug aus dem KITE AND WINDSURFING GUIDE:

Ever since the TV series Gegen den Wind ('Against the Wind’), Sankt Peter-Ording has been one of the Republic's most famous windsurf beaches. Nowadays SPO is also a kite mecca, and not just in summer when the beaches turn into a huge kite jamboree and party mile. What hasn't changed over the years is the broad variety of conditions depending on tide, wind direction and strength. Even the trek to the beach varies from a couple of hundred to a good 1,500m. You can drive part of it, but be careful as the 3m tidal range often claims four-wheeled victims! Conditions vary constantly, as various standing-depth areas and speedstrips form over shallow sand and in tidal creeks. But above all SPO is a wave spot. The stronger the wind, the bigger the waves; south-westerly is particularly nice on ebbing tide, or north-westerly on the flood for wind against a strong tidal current. Thanks to its exposed location, SPO scores well in the wind ratings – and for its full-on beach life in summer too, even 'after hours'.
